This flexible coupling is not used in most installations.  This adapter will allow you to convert the 3 inch od pipe on the toilet to 2 inch pvc schedule 40 pipe.  The factory sizing is for 3inch duct and with a fan for 4 inch duct.  You can typically use dryer venting or bathroom fan venting material for most installations.
